Description:
Investigation into the extent of soil and groundwater contamination was
performed to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of chlorinated
hydrocarbon contamination, as well as petroleum contamination from a faulty
oil/water separator. The monitoring wells indicated low levels of contaminants
in the area of the previously removed separator with migration extending 300
feet.
A comparison of various remediation alternatives was performed and the design
of a soil vapor extraction and air stripping pump and treat system were chosen,
based on timeliness, costs, and regulatory agency influence.
A vapor extraction trench system was installed. A 250 foot
groundwater recovery trench was installed due to the tight soils and low yields
with a groundwater pump and treat system installed with an iron removal system
and low profile air stripper to treat up to 10 gpm. All water discharge permits
were obtained in order to operate the system. Air discharge calculations were
performed, and air permits were not required due to the level of emissions.
