Client: Blakeslee Prestress, Inc.
Location: Branford, Connecticut
Project: Phase II Subsurface Investigation and Contaminated Soil
Excavation
Description:
Blakeslee Prestress Inc., retained DES to investigate the extent of soil and
groundwater contamination and perform any clean up necessary to prevent further
migration of any contamination, as encouraged by the CTDEP under the Voluntary
Remediation Program. The 36-acre industrial property was an episodic Large
Quantity Generator (LQG) of hazardous waste in 1999 and was listed on the
leaking underground storage tank (LUST) database, in October 1990.
DES immediately initiated action by developing a Remedial Investigation Plan
and installing twelve soil borings, in which eight were completed with
monitoring wells to identify any contamination in surficial soils and
groundwater. The investigation concluded petroleum contamination existed in five
areas on the property, required remediation.
DES provided oversight for the excavation of approximately 1,500 yards of
contaminated soil. Confirmation soil samples were collected from each location.
The results of the analysis indicated all petroleum impacted soil was removed
from the site. Post remedial groundwater monitoring is currently being conducted
to show the effectiveness of the soil remediation project. It is anticipated
that monitoring will cease approximately one year from the start of the project.
